GPGMail: Encryption/Decryption of the Subject (feature request)
Hi,
Enigmail 2.0 now supports the encryption of the email subject; however this now means that all emails from Enigmail to GPG Suite have the subject "Encrypted Message"
Is the ability to manage the encrypted subject on the GPG suite roadmap?
Thanks

Hah, just wanted to ask the same question. :)
I found the spec for implementing the change. It's called Memory Hole and is part of the Autocrypt project: https://github.com/autocrypt/memoryhole/blob/master/specs/draft-mem...
It's really simple and straightforward: basically just adds an in-body header of a simple format to the content of encrypted emails, so that the receiver's program can parse it and replace the actual subject line with the subject defined in that header.

Hi Steve,
Many thanks for the prompt response. Is there any way to be notified when there is a nightly build with this feature?
Kind regards,
David

Hi David,
once we change the status of the ticket to "fixed", we will see the connected discussions and update you accordingly with a link to the nightly build that includes the fix.

Hi,
Is there any expected timeline for this? I see the linked ticket was from 2014
Thanks in advance,
David

No, unfortunately there isn‘t at the moment. The problem is still that on macOS Mail encrypted messages are not indexed for search. So if the subject was encrypted as well, that would render encrypted messages completely unsearchable.
I’m not sure at the moment how enigmail handles that, but for us that‘s a reason not to implement it for writing for now. Displaying the decrypted subject should be more easily possible, but we yet to look into it.

Hi Luke,
Is there any timeline for this, as with a licence now being charged for the use of the suite with macOS Mail my company has to decide whether to purchase this or switch to Thunderbird/Enigmail that has this support.
At the moment the encrypted subject emails are not usable in search, so even just having the subject visible and usable in replies would be a start.
Thanks,
David

This is not on the near term timeline. However we would love to add support for this feature.
And hearing there is demand for this surely will up the priority for the existing ticket.
Sorry I don't have better news.
Best,
Steve

Thanks for pinging - currently no. I understand this is not the answer you were hoping for, am aware this feature request has existed for a long time and I myself would love to have this feature but the current priority is to get GPG Mail ready for macOS Monterey which is due rather soon.
