GPG Keychain and/or GPGServices 2.5b6

When I select a file or highlight text and right click to select services then choose "OpenPGP: Encrypt" nothing happens

I expected a dialog asking which key to use to encrypt.

Are you encrypting to yourself or another recipient? GPG Suite in Apple Mail will encrypt automatically if the person to whom you are sending the e-mail has a key pair and the public key is in your GPG Keychain. The encryption will be indicated by the "lock" in the upper right-hand corner of your Apple Mail screen appearing closed (rather than open). If the lock remains "open", the message did not encrypt. Note that the encrypted text appears on your own Mail software as plain text.

thanks. I ultimately used Mail to encrypt. What I was attempting was encrypting text.

I’m confused: you pasted text into some application other than Apple Mail and it failed to encrypt? I think GPG is integrated with Apple Mail at this point. Old versions of it (Phil Zimmerman’s original PGP before he sold it) was “free standing”. In any event, it seems as if your problem has been resolved successfully.

I believe you are also supposed to be able to highlight text, right click, choose "services" then "openPGP encrypt" at which point a dialog opens asking you which key in your keychain to use. The GPGTools website says "GPG Services is a plugin that brings GPG power to almost any application. It allows you to encrypt/decrypt, sign/verify and import keys from text selections, files, folders and much more."

That's my understanding as well and I've had the same problem myself. I don't have a satisfactory explanation and I don't want to convey the impression I am an expert...I'm not. Let me see what I can find out. If you post the comment you sent to me, it may yield a quicker answer.

I'm also having this problem. when I go to contextual menu > services > gpg decode to decode a gpg message, the program switcher twitches, then nothing happens. Safari 8.0.5, OS 10.10.3. Meanwhile the Mac Mail plugin is working fine.

Well I found my problem. I set the service quick key to decrypt file and i was selecting text, not a file. Same with the contextual menu.

    Hi all,

headShrinker, thanks for the update. Glad you were able to find out what went wrong in your case.

@Andrew: How did you update the tools? Did you use automatic upates or did you install GPG Suite beta 6 from our homepage? When you select GPGServices > OpenPGP: Encrypt file can you please open Console.app and see if it spits out any related errors when you are attempting to launch GPGServices.

@Keith: If you are still having issues with GPGServices, could you please open a separate discussion and we'll go from there.

    All the best,
    steve

Both actually. First I updated and when I couldn't get the text/file encoding to work, I downloaded the new beta.

There are a lot of messages on Console, none obviously related to GPGTools. What specifically should I look for?

I have this problem periodically as well. A restart will typically fix it, but not always.

    Hi,

is there any chance that some of you have the Pushbullet Extension installed?
We've heard reports of exactly this nature which were connected to that extension.

Could you please check Console.app for any error messages regarding GPGServices?

    Thanks.

Keith: just use spotlight, type console and it will find console.app.

Frank, hm this sounds very odd. Would you be willing to give the beta 6 another go? If the problem persists, this is definitely something we would want to investigate. As Luke pointed out, if issues with b6 persist, please have a peek at console.app while trying to do the encryption and post any related errors here. If it is a lot of text, please post a txt file attached to your reply.

I do not have Pushbullet. I am able to decrypt highlighted text on a second computer, also running Yosemite, but I get an error message (code= 0) when I try to decrypt a selected file.

Andrew: Bad news, at the moment, the only solution is to uninstall the PushBullet plugin. We did contact the developers of PushBullet, but didn't hear back.

GPGServices is just one of several softwares affected by PushBullet.

Tried updating to Version 1.2b6 (1057b) on the Mac Mini where nothing happens. No change.

Correct, but on Mac Mini there is no response at all to the command. On Macbook I get error code = 0.

On Mac Mini there is also no response at all to command to decrypt selected text, but the function works on Macbook.
