How can I import a public key sent to me as file
Hi guys, there are some things I don't understand and I am unsure if you will be able to explain them to me, with out actually talking to me. I have gpg suite installed on my mac and I have noticed that as long as the little lock locks, then I seem to be able to send encrypted emails. This is great and was all I needed for quite some time, until I had someone wishing me to send them a pgp message and they have sent a key which is like a big mess of encryption. Now how do I use that key to encrypt mail to him and also how do I find out what my public keys are, because they don't seem to be big long things like that. Please is there anyway someone could Skype with me and help me ? I find this stuff a little hard, but I really need to learn as I feel like my privacy is being invaded.

Thank You kindly for getting back to me, I would love to speak with someone on Skype at your convenience. I am in Australia, but I will try to be available when ever suits. I am not the most techno of folks and I just know that if I could explain to someone via voice, that would help me greatly.

Hi John,
I'm busy today, but might have the chance to help you out via live chat if my replies do not solve the issue already.
Someone sent you a public key in file form. What is the file format? Is it called .asc or .txt?
What you need to do is, import that public key to GPG Keychain. Try dragging the file into the GPG Keychain main window. If that does not work, open the file, mark everything and copy paste the text to GPG Keychain main window.
Ideally that would import the public key in quesiton and after having the pub key in GPG Keychain you should then be able to write encrypted messages to that recipient via Mail.app.
Let me know how this goes.

I was learning how to use your tools, when I realised I had not yet upgraded to Yosemite. I did so, unwittingly disabling the use of gpg tools. Any word when you will have a update ?

Hi John,
can you please copy all version info as described here into this discussion.
This sounds like you have an old release installed. GPG Suite beta 5 is available from https://gpgtools.org/ and it works on OS X 10.10.
Regards,
steve

Hi Steve, I could not hover over the version and copy to clip board, please excuse my lack of techyness. I have taken these screen shots, does this help. My intuition says I am not running the latest version some how.

Hey John,
your intuition is right :D
Please visit https://gpgtools.org/ and download GPG Suite beta 5. After that retry to import the key in question.
If that does not work, please set this discussion to "private" (button on the right side) and attach the public key in question.
All the best,
steve

Hey Steve, thank you very much. I downloaded the new version and I am certainly getting somewhere, I have made the mistake in the passed of believing that I needed a different key for each email address and things have got a little confusing. I am going to send you a encrypted test message from another email address ( [email blocked] <mailto:[email blocked]>) . Just to see that it works. This email address does not seem to have the open pgp at the top in green. See the screen shots, but my others have it. I believe I may have to revoke a key to this one and set up or copy one over for this email address ?
Anyway, I will go home tonight and practice with the emails and also encrypting files etc. Hopefully I can get it all worked out on my own. Thank you so much for all your help so far.
Ultimately, I would like to have just one bloody key, but I should have asked for help earlier rather than stumbling around in the dark.
Cheers J.

Hey John,
this KB-article covers what you are seeking to do. You need to decide which key to keep and which key to revoke.
Just let us know, if you need further assistance, but sounds like you got a grip on things now :)
Kindly,
steve
