Hi

Just noticed that when using Mac Mail (Yosemite) in plain text mode and signing a message any attachments do not get sent with the message

Is this a feature, or is it a fault

If I don't sign the message OR choose HTML / Rich Text as the message format then all is well

Kind regards

Geraint

    Hi Geraint,

could you please check if you have PGP legacy mode / inline PGP enabled by running the following command in Terminal and posting the output:

    defaults read org.gpgtools.gpgmail UseOpenPGPInlineToSend

    Thanks.

    -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
    Hash: SHA512

     defaults read org.gpgtools.gpgmail UseOpenPGPInlineToSend Output = 1

I set it this way so that the fancy square displayed around my signed messages

    Should I set it to 0 ?

    Regards

    Geraint

    HI Geraint,

it seems you are using OpenPGP/Inline. We currently do not support sending encrypted attachments in that mode. Is there any specific reason, why you changed away from PGP/MIME?

    I suggest you:

    • open temrinal
    • paste the following and press enter

defaults write org.gpgtools.gpgmail UseOpenPGPInlineToSend -bool NO

to switch back to PGP/MIME which allows to send encrypted attachments.

More info on why we default to PGP/MIME:

GPGMail defaults to the only standard there is for sending OpenPGP Mails, which is PGP/MIME. The format you are referring to, is called PGP/Inline and is an undocumented non-standard format, which leads to several problems, which is why we default to PGP/MIME.

Nevertheless you can switch GPGMail to use OpenPGP/Inline. While this is not encouraged, we've added that option.
Find out how to do that here.

There's no difference in security level, yet you have to be aware, that while PGP/MIME also encrypts all attachments, OpenPGP/Inline does not!

Also, you're limited to text only. Any formatting will be ignored.

If you want to read more about the deficites of Inline/PGP you may want to read this note of Daniel Kahn Gillmore called Inline PGP signatures considered harmful.

    All the best,
    steve
