GPG Suite 10.6 32-bit

GPG Suite Beta 4 downloaded today

I am running an older Mac Mini. It has Intel Core Duo (not the core2), so it is 32 bit only. But it still runs Mac OS 10.6.8. Unfortunately I'm finding that many apps saying they support OS X 10.6 only support it in 64bit mode which isn't possible in my case. I'm at the end of the line for the OS this box will support. (I'm also living in a fairly remote location in Africa, buying a new mac isn't trivial)

When I try to run one of the applications, GPG Keychain for instance, a dialog box appears that says, "You cannot open the application GPG Keychain because it is not supported on this type of Mac. "

Attached is a screen shot to show you what I'm seeing.

What did you expect instead

I had hoped that the application would run in 32 bit mode. However, I realize Apps are being built as 64bits for Macs these days. Is there a way to get a 32bit version of this, or are there any other slightly older downloads available that may work in my case?

Describe steps leading to the problem.

  1. I installed GPGTools Suite Beta 4, downloaded today. The installation went perfectly.
  2. I tried to run GPG Keychain, and got the dialog message mentioned above.

If your problem concerns GPGMail, are you using any other plugins?

no other plugins in use.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi Doug,

    yes we're here :)

I do have bad news for you. Sadly GPG Suite does no longer run on 32-bit systems. That means GPG Suite beta 4 will not work on old systems as you do have one. I'm not sure if we have the capacity to come up with a solution for such old systems. Dev time is very thin streched in this project. So this might be a dead end. Are you planning on getting a new mac by any chance?

    All the best,
    steve

Upgrading isn't an option for me at the moment. Are there older versions
of the software available that I could run?

    Thanks for your response,
    Doug

    Hi Doug,

we've a ticket for this problem. Since this will require us, to find the time to create a special build for 32-bit macs, it might be a few weeks from now though. So please be patient.

If this discussion get's closed, it will be re-opened as soon as the ticket is closed so you'll receive a notification. Feel free to open a new discussions should you run into further problems or need assistance.

    All the best,

I live in the US and this is also a problem I facing. I could github the source code and compile it for your project if you don't anticipate too many issues accomplishing a clean build. Please let me know your gcc flags for a distribution build if you would like me to perform this task.

    Cheers,
    Amber

    Hi,
I live in Germany and have the same problem like Doug. I am running an older MacBook with Intel Core Duo, 32 bit, Snow leopard 10.6 also. This hardware is very well for me and works fine. I think there are many users still working with older 32 bit hardware and like to encrypt emails by GPG Tools. It would be nice if you could create a special build für 32 bit Macs. Thanks so much in Advance, hope hear something about this as soon as possible.
    Best regards
    Harald

    Hi Doug and Ho,

as a first step to improve the situation on 32-bit 10.6 macs, the GPG Suite should now no longer install on such incompatible systems.

Could you please download and install our latest nightly build and see if the problem persists. That page also has sig and SHA1 to verify the download.

We have a second ticket open to provide an Installer for such old system and we'll keep you posted when that is ready.

    All the best, steve

Disclaimer: This is a development version which has not been thoroughly tested yet - bugs or crashes are to be expected. Thanks for helping us test.

    Hi Steve,
thank´s so much for your activities in this case. Unfortunately, that does not install the nightly builds for me to be successful. I have done the following:
    1. Uninstall the GPG suite
    2. Attempt the files of the latest nightly build to download:
    - GPG Suite (1298n) = The request URL/nightlies/GPG Suite 1299n. dmg was not found on this server - GPG Keychain = The request URL was not found/nightlies GPGKeychain-1061n.dmg on this server - GPG Mail (923n) = You need Mac OSX 10.7 or higher. This version of GPGMail can not be installed on this computer - GPG Preference (776n) = successfully installed - GPG Service (786n) = successfully installed and enabled in System Preference Keyboard - Mac PGP2 (805n) = successfully installed

Mail was restarted but the GPG tool does not appear in the settings. Encrypting is not possible.
So, what can I do? Have I failed to install yourself? One problem seems to be that GPG Keychain missing. Without this, of course, cannot be verified the secret and public key. Maybe I just wait for the next build?
In any case I have to say thank you for your effort. I hope for the next trial.
    All the best
    Harald

    Hey Harald,

we had a glitch with the server cache and nightlies. That should be working now.

So at the moment it would be great, to give the latest nightly another spin and see if it installs at all (it should not).

We are still working on a GPG Suite which works on old 32-bit systems. So currently have to disappoint.

But we'll keep you posted as soon as we have a version available.

Hi Steve, There is more of us waiting for such a built. I tried to build myself and was only able to build Libmacgpg for 32 bit. There is this compiler error which I can't get rid of:

error: -fobjc-arc is not supported on platforms using the legacy runtime
Command /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Toolchains/XcodeDefault.xctoolchain/usr/bin/clang failed with exit code 1

Kamran and Koman, could you do us a favor and please download the latest nightly GPG Suite from here: https://releases.gpgtools.org/nightlies/

Can you let me know if this installs on your system.

We are currently working on the stable release of GPG Suite. Once that is out we will then deal with the old 32bit systems and hopefully come up with a solution.

Steve, The installer now correctly detects the system is 32 bit and does not install.

Kamran, thanks a lot for your test. We do not have a 32bit system to test this here, so rely on user feedback for such old systems. We are still in the midst of working on the stable release. Once that is done, we'll try to come up with a separate installer for old systems.

Closing this discussion for the time being. We'll open it and announce news as we have them.
