Why does GPG Suite try to open a file in my Documents when it runs the Updater?

Which of our tools is giving you problems? GPG Suite / GPG Suite Updater

Attach a screenshot of the version info for all installed components (how to: https://gpgtools.tenderapp.com/kb/faq/where-can-i-find-version-info...): Attached.

Describe your problem. Add as much detail as possible. When I unlocked my computer this morning, there was a dialog on the screen (screenshot attached). The dialog suggests that GPG Suite Updater tried to open a (seemingly random) markdown file in ~/Documents/Personal/Archive/.

What did you expect instead I don't expect GPG Suite to be opening any of my personal files unless I tell it to.

Describe steps leading to the problem. I unlocked my MacBook this morning. The dialog was right there on the desktop, with no other GPG Suite-related windows open.

Are you using any other Mail.app plugins? No.

    Hi David,

welcome to the GPGTools support platform. Sorry you are having problems using GPG Suite.

This is the first report of this kind we receive. Can you open any markdown file in Finder then press ⌘I to display the info panel. In the "Open with:" section you can click "Change all…" and select the program you would like to open markdown fiiles with.

Confirm and you should be good.

Let us know if that worked as expected.

    Best,
    Steve

That works as expected. However the default was set to Xcode, not GPG Suite. So I'm still unsure how GPG suite attempted to open a random markdown file in my Documents.

Just to be clear, I'm not having any technical issues, and GPG Suite hasn't attempted to open a random file since I filed this ticket. I'm just reporting this strange behavior as I thought there might be a bug, or at least something for your team to note, since GPG Suite attempting to open a file without being asked might be a security issue.

    Thanks for your response!

Are you able to reproduce the problem after setting xCode as default markdown software?

We have tested this but were unable to reproduce, so if you are able to reproduce this problem, we can dig deeper and see what could be causing the switch. Prior to changing the default app, was GPG Suite Updater indeed set as default app for markdown (I know you did not set it, but was it showing up in finder for markdown files)?

GPG Suite nor GPG Suite Updater was ever set as the default app for Markdown files.

The default app for markdown files was set to Xcode, something I never chose. I assume Xcode takes control of markdown files when you install it, for whatever reason. I never changed it.

Since opening this ticket, I changed the default markdown app to VimR, my preferred GUI text editor. However, to test and attempt to reproduce this issue, I just changed the default app for markdown files back to Xcode, where it was originally. After that change, markdown files attempt to open in Xcode as expected, but no GPG Suite dialog appears. I was unable to reproduce the issue.

For your records, I am running macOS 10.15.4 on a 2017 13" MacBook Pro.

Thanks for your further tests. As we are unable to reproduce the initial situation I will close this discussion. You can always re-open and also file a new one if more questions arise.

    All the best,
    Steve
