GPG Keychain: Why is there still no way to create ECC keys via the GUI?

Which of our tools is giving you problems? GPG Keychain

Attach a screenshot of the version info for all installed components (how to: https://gpgtools.tenderapp.com/kb/faq/where-can-i-find-version-info...): I’m not going to attach a screenshot. I’m using the latest beta, and I know this feature is in Stable but is not in the GUI, hence my issue report.

Describe your problem. Add as much detail as possible. I attempt to create a key, and if I open Advanced options the options for “Key type” do NOT contain support for ECC.

What did you expect instead It’s 2019. I expected to be able to create ECC keys without going to the terminal. gpg has supported ECC for many years, and GPGTools has supported it in stable since 2017.

    Hi Brian,

we are following what GnuPG does by default on that point. We absolutely agree that it is time to start migrating users to ECC keys, but unfortunately at the moment that could still lead to incompatibilities, since not all OpenPGP implementations support ECC keys.

We hope to have better news in the near future and will consider creating ECC keys via GUI at least as an advanced/experimental feature.

    Thank you for your input.

    Hi Brian,

we know it has been a while but we have some news to share with you:

We have updated MacGPG to version 2.4 and made ECC keys the new default when generating a key in GPG Keychain.

That change is not yet part of the stable or beta release. But it is available in our latest hotfix GPG Suite. After additional testing those changes will be part of the upcoming beta.

It would be very helpful if you could install the nightly build and let us know how things work for you.

    All the best,
    Steve
