Hello folks,

Following the recent release of GPG Suite, I started to think about initiating the translation of the KB to French.
In addition, it would also be consistent to translate the application as well.

Regarding the KB, I already started to work on it: https://github.com/FlorentATo/GPGTools

Perhaps it might be interesting to put your website/KB on github directly, to ease the work of the community.

What do you think ?

Cheers,
@Florent_ATo

    Hey Florent_ATo,

thanks a lot for your input. It's much easier for us to respond here than struggeling with the 140 char limitation on twitter.

Your input on this is welcome and we have not yet responded because we are still looking for a solution on how to best solve this problem.

We'll respond with more details soon.

    Kind regards,
    steve

Florent, first - thanks a lot for your contribution!

The first steps tutorial is really useful and our most visited KB article in the database. We've added a french version with a few minor corrections. Here's the KB article:

    https://gpgtools.tenderapp.com/kb/how-to/premiers-pas-ou-commencer

Currently we have 4 projects on transifex (which we use for localization). It would be great if you could join the french team here: https://www.transifex.com/gpgtools/teams/12430/fr/

We have not yet found a solution, how to best deal with localizing the KB articles.

If you are willing to do more work, please email us directly teamATgpgtoolsDOTorg. An option would be to send you the source strings via email.

We understand that process is not ideal, but we need more time to find a scalable automated solution. But adding a very long file to transifex somewhat defeats it's purpose so we'd have to split the KB articles into smaller sections but are not sure which mechanism to use for that. Also this process needs to be reversable.

So for now, mailing back and forth it is.

Let me know what you think and if any additional changes need to be made for the french version.

    All the best,
    steve

Hello Steve and thanks for getting back to me as well as considering my contribution.

First, I think it would be better to rename French version by "Premiers pas", both in the title and the link in the article itself.

I have followed your recommendation and created a transifex account, you can add me to the French translation team. I didn't know this website before but I guess it provides some sort of versioning for each committed translation, right ?. Otherwise, why not simply using github ?

If your website use flat files (instead of storing content in a database), you might consider moving the relevant code of the site to Github and manage the translation by accepting pull requests. Does that make sens ?
Unlike me, I believe you've done extensive research on that matter... :)

Next, your email address has been removed for your post. You should have my email attached to this post. Otherwise, drop me a DM on twitter.

Finally, the French article is not perfect yet. They're some remaining typos and we should update the screenshot with the French version.

Transifex as quite a few advantages when compared to GitHub. GitHub isn't a great solution when it comes to localizations. We've used that mechanism before switching to Transifex and Transifex has prooved a lot more effective in all kind of regards.

We've edited the mail address to now show in a readable form. I have sent a mail with the current version to your mail address.

    Kindly,
    steve

Hello Steve and thanks for getting back to me.

We can close this thread but we should further the discussions to find a better way to translate the knowledge base.

On a side note, I will update the current translation to something more "readable" in a near future. I keep you posted.

    Regards,
    Florent

We understand you are unhappy about the current solution and there are various ways to do this in a better way. But all are not trivial to setup. Ideally we'd have the KB articles in Transifex.

But then again that wouldn't be very elegant, since all the javascript and formatting tags would be included. And then it would become very messy.

We can keep discussing this, but I don't see a simple solution to this problem. At the moment we are very busy with higher priority stuff so this is a bit out of scope.

    Kindly,
    steve
