GPG Mail button in main composer toolbar and VoiceOver
Hi there!
I'm a blind VoiceOver user and use the current beta of GPG Tools and the mail extension in Sequoia. When composing an email, I can access the two check boxes for signing and encrypting mail just fine. However, there is a button in the main toolbar (where the Send button is) that only says "GPG Mail" button. If I try to activate that button with either the keyboard, a VoiceOver command to execute the standard click, or even use the mouse emulation to click it, nothing changes.
What does this button do? Is it a checkbox of some sort that toggles, for example whether to attach the public key or not? Because to VoiceOver, it is just a button that doesn't do anything.
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!
Marco

Hi Marco,
awesome to see you still using GPG Mail and reporting usability issues for sigh impaired users. We appreciated that a lot, so thank you for taking the time!
The button you are referring to is designed by Apple and has no functionality other than indicating the fact, that a Mail Extension is active.
The button icon shows a puzzle piece which is the icon Apple decided to use for Extensions.
Kind regards,
Steve

PS: If you disable the extension temporarily you will not that the button will be absent in drafts.

Hi Steve!
Yes, I still use it and enjoy doing so. :-)
So then I have another question: Do I always attach my public key to messages, or can I toggle that somewhere? Not that I mind, I like sending it always, but was wondering if there was something I was missing. Or are the "sign" and (if available ) "encrypt" checkboxes the only two controls that I should be seeing in the mail composition window as long as the extension is active?
Thanks!
Marco

There are indeed only two buttons (encrypt + sign).
Please note, that in the extension beta the defaults are not working any longer due to limitations in Apples API. We mentioned this shortcoming many many times but so far, sadly, Apple has not yet added the missing functionality to the API so that this would work again as expected.
So especially for bling users please double check the button state before sending out an encrypted email. The buttons will keep their last state. So if you send an encrypted mail the next email that can be encrypted (i.e. for which a public key exists for the recipient) will also be encrypted. But if you disable the button, the next email will also not be encrypted, despite your default settings, which are basically without function currently.
We do not offer an option to automatically attach your public key. One alternative would be to upload your public key to the key server if not done already and share the URL to your public key in the email signature.

Hi Steve,
thanks again for your help! Yes, I have uploaded my public key to the key server, and from the exchanges so far, people have had no problems retrieving it.
Also thanks for the heads-up regarding the defaults. Fortunately, both checkboxes can be easily reached so that I can verify that things are set as I want them.
I think we can close this discussion now. My questions have been answered.
Marco
