welcome to the GPGTools support platform. Sorry you are having problems using GPG Suite.

Can you share a link of the instructions you are trying to follow please.

Best,
Steve

Stevetag:gpgtools.tenderapp.com,2011-11-04:Comment/490142062021-02-04T14:07:35Z2021-02-04T14:07:36ZEncryption doesn't` work

Hi Steven,

yes of course, I tried to follow these instructions from this web:https://gpgtools.tenderapp.com/kb/gpg-services-faq/how-to-encrypt-a...
Please note that I`m referring to part 2.Encrypt text (not file!)

If I follow the instructions as described there, I always end by OpenPGP:Encrypt. When clicking on that nothing happens, nor I see anywhere the encrypted text...where I find it? Thanks Therese

Theresetag:gpgtools.tenderapp.com,2011-11-04:Comment/490142062021-02-04T16:05:21Z2021-02-04T16:05:21ZEncryption doesn't` work

Hi Therese,

thanks. That KB article was really old and we have updated the article today. Could you please reload the article in your browser, try to follow the updated steps and let me know if you were now able to get this working as expected.

Kind regards,
Steve

Stevetag:gpgtools.tenderapp.com,2011-11-04:Comment/490142062021-02-04T19:36:41Z2021-02-04T19:36:42ZEncryption doesn't` work

Hi Steve,

thanks for replying! Could you please specify, if Word isn't recommended, which text editors are. Could you give please some concrete example? Because apart from Word I don't use any another...so I'm little bit lost. Why Word isn`t actually recommended/supported?

Thank you!

Theresetag:gpgtools.tenderapp.com,2011-11-04:Comment/490142062021-02-04T21:22:45Z2021-02-04T21:22:45ZEncryption doesn't` work

Sure - the KB recommends TextEdit. It comes pre-installed on any mac and is easiest to find via spotlight.

Please refer to the KB article again to see how to switch TextEdit to use PlainText. That is another important step. And that step is also the explanation why Word or LibreOffice cannot be used with OpenPGP. Those editors do not just store the text but a lot of information about formatting, font and all sorts of other things. That other information then renders the encrypted OpenPGP message unusable and users then are stuck with encrypted information they are unable to decrypt. The plaintext format prevents all those problems and is thus the best option to be used with OpenPGP.

Let me know if you were able to get things working or if you need additional help.

Stevetag:gpgtools.tenderapp.com,2011-11-04:Comment/490142062021-02-05T12:45:56Z2021-02-05T12:45:58ZEncryption doesn't` work

Hi Steve,

I tried it as instructed and it worked excellently. Thank you very much for your help and stay safe!

Best, Therese

Theresetag:gpgtools.tenderapp.com,2011-11-04:Comment/490142062021-02-09T22:42:45Z2021-02-09T22:42:45ZEncryption doesn't` work

Awesome. The updated version highlights the fact, that formatted text will not work reliable with OpenPGP.

Glad your were already able to get things working as expected.
