Composing Email creates always encrypted Draft

Hi,

I use 2.5b4 with Yosemite 10.10.1 and Apple Mail. When I compose an Email to a Recipient without GPG Key (thus only signed, not encrypted), I sometimes get a Email in my Draft Folder left, which shows the "Encrpyted" Sign to ON.

Despite the "signed" version of the email gets transmitted successfully and can be found in the sent folder, the "encrypted" copy resides in the Drafts Folder and has to be deleted manually. Happens especially with large attachments.

I have set the mailbox behaviour to let mail store all items on the imap server, including drafts because I use mail on different devices.

Best regards,

Michael

    Hi Michael,

this is an issue which has been around for a long time, and we've yet to determine unfortunately if it's a Mail or GPGMail bug, since it has been seen with and without GPGMail installed.
What makes it harder is that it only happens very infrequently.
Are you able to reproduce this more reliably?

It is not an infrequent experience for me. Running the latest beta, Yosemite and Mail, all updated to latest versions. I also get the decrypt dialog box when I delete a lot of messages.

    Hi,

I have got this error also without GPG, especially with slow Internet Connections and storing Drafts on the Imap Account instead of locally.
So what irritated me is that the drafts are encrypted, but it is reasonable:
Drafts need to be encrypted because if they are stored serverside, content is transfered through the wire.
So Problem is reduced to an old Apple Mail Problem with Imap Drafts stored serverside... I guess it is no GPG Problem

@Philip, can you please create your own discussion and describe your problem there. Make sure to fill all the default questions so we can help you as quickly as possible.

@Michael: That would have been my interpretation of what you described you where seeing. You have a few options to experiment with. In Mail.app > Accounts > Mailbox behavior > Drafts you can untick the option to "Store drafts on server". That way they don't end up on the server. See if that changes anything? Then you could also temporarily remove GPGMail and see if the draft issue are the same without GPGMail.

    • shut down mail.app
    • open finder
    • navigate to /Library/Mail/Bundles or ~/Library/Mail/Bundles and copy GPGMail.mailbundle to your desktop
    • now delete GPGMail.mailbundle from the original folder

Restart mail and check in Mail.app > Preferences if you still see GPGMail. It should be gone.

In Mail.app > Preferences > GPGMail you can also disable "Encrypt drafts". But that is not recommended.

    All the best,
    steve

Michael, did you find the time to try this out?

    Hi,

Funny, I did not get the email notification of the last post.
Yes, this is an issue with apple mail with and without gpg, turning off "store drafts on server" will cure the issue.

    Regards

    Hi Michael and Philip,

thank you both for your quick feedback on this.

This problem with undeleted drafts has been popping up in rare cases for a long time now.

In my attempts to produce undeleted drafts after sending out the draft, I was unsuccessful trying with GPGMail active as well as with GPGMail disabled. Since attachments where often involved I did use some very large (~5-15MB) attachments.

Philip, glad that for you the problem seems entirely solved. But could you both try triggering this?

For my tests I had "Store on drafts" activated in my test mail account in mail.app. I normally have that disabled so I know, that in my daily usage, so far with the setting disabled I did not run into any remaining drafts after sending out the message.

As Michael stated in Comment 6, this happened to users with and without GPGMail. That would mean it is a general mail.app bug and unrelated to GPGMail. Maybe Apple did tweak mail.app along the way and this issue has been fixed since then.

We'd love to hear more on that and if you can help test this out, it would be greatly appreciated.

    All the best,
    steve

Michael, have you seen undeleted drafts using the 2015 06 stable GPG Suite + OS X 10.10.4?
