GPGMail: Mail stuck with loading emails

Mail stuck while loading emails.

The problem started yesterday. I first thought it was a server or Apple Mail problem.
I also deleted the Envelope file and reindex and rebuild all accounts.
However the problem was still there.
Older emails weren’t affected with this problem only new incoming emails.

Then I realised this problem appeared after I installed the beta 2 Suite.
So I removed the suite and all E-Mails where loading and displaying normal.

Steps to reproduce:
Install GPG Suite beta 2
open Apple Mail and use it like everyday
few new incoming emails won’t display when clicking on it
a endless turning wheel with the word loading appears .

Expected
I expected that I can read all emails that it won’t sutck

    Hi All!

I have the exact same issues and it's getting progressively worse, to the point I can now hardly open any emails anymore.

I was wondering, since this is now a few weeks ago since reported, if there are any new developments here and perhaps a slight glimpse at a timeline when we can expect a fix? :) No mean to rush anything and I understand development time is limited, just hoping to have some sort of idea when this can perhaps be solved.

    Thank you

Carl, we don't give ETAs, because with reverse engineering that is a bad idea. Work to fix this bug which is at highest priority at the moment has begun but is not finished.

We'll announce as soon as we have news.

I'm experiencing the same issue. It appears that the bug occurs when trying to view an email with an attachment.

I can flip around through emails fine until I click on one that has an attachment. From then on they get stuck "Loading..." and I have to restart Mail.

My versions are the same as the original author of this ticket. I have no other plugins installed.

Here is the system.log for when the error occurred:

    Hi Jacky and Sam,

this issue has been fixed in our latest nightly GPG Suite. That page also has sig and SHA265 to verify the download.

It would be awesome if you could install that nightly build and let us know, if it solves the "Loading..." issue for you.

    Looking forward to your feedback,
    steve

Disclaimer: This is a development version which has not been thoroughly tested yet, so bugs or crashes are to be expected. Thanks for helping us test this fix.

It would appear the problem is not fixed with the nightlies here.
In fact: it crashed Mail entirely this time around.

    Kind regards

    Dear Steve,

thank you for the nightly build.

I get right to the point: Loading problem not fully solved

Now I didn’t experience the Loading… issue on every Mail account only in one.
I also tried to reproduce the problem but this time it is hard to reproduce.

    What I did:
    A)
I installed GPG Suite 1783n on my already 2 days running system.
And went through my mails and switch through my accounts.
In one account I cliked on new arrived email —> Loading… issue appeared.
I clicked to a different mail account (mailbox) and try to go back to the mailbox with the problem.
It resulted in Apple Beachball and got stuck. (it didn’t even reach the Loading… issue)

    B)
I restarted my Mac and opened Mail
clicked on the mailbox with the problem.
It resulted in Apple beachball and got stuck. (it didn’t even reach the Loading… issue)

    C)
I closed Mail and uninstalled GPG Suite.
Opend Mail clicked on the mailbox with the problem.
    Everything was fine.

    D)
    I reinstalled GPG Suite 1783n.
    Didn’t restart my Mac.
Clicked on the mailbox with the problem.
    Everything is fine.

    E)
I marked the Mails wich had the Loading… issue as unread.
Closed Mail and reopened Mail click on the “fake” new Mails
    but nothing happend

    F)
I waited for new emails arriving.
2 emails arrived one with attachments one without.
    (GPG Suite still installed)
Those 2 emails also appear on other mailboxes because a forward to my
    private account was active.

I clicked in both mailboxes on the mail without attachment. —> everything fine
I clicked in both mailboxes on the mail with attachment —> 1 mailbox fine — 2nd Mailbox (the mailbox wich previously also had the problem) showed Loading…
I clicked on a different mailbox, clied back on the problem mailbox —> Beachball

    G)
    I uninstalled GPG Suite
    everything back normal

    H)
I sent 2 emails to the account / mailbox with the problem
again one with attachment and one without
installed GPG Suite and run the test like in (F)
results are the same as (F)

    ———————————
    Assumption:
This problem does not appear in every account/mailbox.
This problem does only apprea on new (never read before) emails with attachments.
If a mailbox has an email with Loading.. issue this mailbox will result in Apple beachball
    wenn the account is selected.

    ———————————
    Notes:
previously this Loading… problem appreared on different accounts

I hope I could shed some light to this problem and
I hope hueser, sam or carl can try (H) and confirm my assumption.

    greetings
    Jacky

    Hi Jacky,

thanks a lot for your detailed feedback. The problem that this bug is hard to reproduce makes it so difficult to fix. On one of our machines we never see that problem at all. On a second machine it happened a single time in the past few weeks.

It would be very helpful if you could create additional debug information:

Please follow the steps below, when you are running into a hang or loading issue:

    Spindump

    • open Activity Monitor
    • sort after 'Process Name' (first column) and select Mail
    • click the cogwheel icon and select 'Spindump'
    • 'Save...' the Spindump output to your desktop
    • attach the resulting file to your existing discussion

    Process Sample

    • open Activity Monitor
    • sort after 'Process Name' (first column) and select Mail
    • click the cogwheel icon and select 'Sample Process'
    • 'Save...' the Spindump output to your desktop
    • attach the resulting file to your existing discussion

    Looking forward to your feedback.

    Have a great day,

This comment was split into a new private discussion: GPGMail: Mail stuck with loading emails

Just to note; Mail.app crashing instantly has been resolved with the latest nightly, and my emails are displaying fine again.

However, any encrypted e-mail I receive will not decrypt anymore.
It shows the error "Verification failed: no signature found".
I can decrypt it from the command line (gpg --output doc --decrypt file.asc) without any issues at all, so I'm not sure what's up.

Oh well, at least my Mail client is accessible again. :) Thanks.

    Dear Steve,

    thx for the update.
I got my MBP back this weekend.
I just installed the latest nightlies.

luckily I had enough new unread emails, since my MBP was at apple service for 1 week,
I tested with 6 different accounts and all where ok.
The Loading spinning wheel does appear, when loading emails with attachments, but after a short time the actual mail
does appear. [Feature request: faster loading]

    what is more,
it is a off topic but I don’t know if this is related with case

    - I can’t send myself an encrypted email. It always shows that I do not have a publickey
for my own email account. However GPG Keychain says otherwise.
Sending encrypted email to other people e.g. [email blocked] is ok.

    - while installing the GPTTools Installer asked me to close Mail, although Mail wasn’t open.

right now I can’t test the decryption part, because I haven’t received an
encrypted mail, and I can’t send one to myself.
Can someone send me an encrypted mail?

    greetings

    Dear Steve,

I have one more issue with this nightly build,
however it is again not related the the original thread topic.
I don’t know if you can move this to a new thread.

When I am writing a new email I always get the notification that it was
Unable to encrypt the message. (see attachment)
However “Encrypt new messages by default" isn’t checked. (see attachment)

This notification will appear while typing and
will reset the message window to the very left of the screen.

I also removed and reinstalled the GPGTools.
Restarted my MBP. But this issue keeps appearing.

I don’t know if you need them, but I also attached the Spindump and Process Sample.
