Purpose of ~/.gnupg_pre_2.1 - can it be removed?

I'm running GPG Suite 2018.5 on Mojave 10.14.2
I noticed today I have 2 directories:

~/.gnupg
~/.gnupg_pre_2.1

Are both of these needed? Just curious, if the old one can be removed safely.
Thank you

    Hi there,

we created ~/.gnupg_pre_2.1 during the migration from 2.0 to 2.2 and it prooved good to have that backup as a fallback option for users who ran into trouble migrating their keys. If everything works for you with MacGPG 2.2.x you can remove the folder, although it doesn't hurt, to have it as a backup.

    Hope this explains the situation.

    All the best,
    Steve
