GPGTools preference pane will not open
I' running OSX 10.7.3. I've downloaded and installed the latest GPG Tools. I've got everything working except that System Preferences cannot display the GPGPreferences pane. When I try it, I get these error messages. Suggestions??

Hi,
we haven't seen this problem before.
Could you try to install the nightly version of GPGPreferences from
http://nightly.gpgtools.org/GPGPreferences-trunk.dmg
Let us know if it fixed the issue for you!

The GPG Preferences pane will not open, even after installing the new build. Here are sample console messages:
2/8/12 5:57:17.706 PM System Preferences: Can't load config (/Users/sysadmin/.gnupg/gpg-agent.conf): Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=260 "The file “gpg-agent.conf” couldn’t be opened because there is no such file." UserInfo=0x400f558e0 {NSFilePath=/Users/sysadmin/.gnupg/gpg-agent.conf, NSUnderlyingError=0x400f54ba0 "The operation couldn’t be completed. No such file or directory"}
2/8/12 5:57:17.717 PM System Preferences: Can't load config (/Users/sysadmin/.gnupg/gpg-agent.conf): Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=260 "The file “gpg-agent.conf” couldn’t be opened because there is no such file." UserInfo=0x400e848e0 {NSFilePath=/Users/sysadmin/.gnupg/gpg-agent.conf, NSUnderlyingError=0x400f49f40 "The operation couldn’t be completed. No such file or directory"}
2/8/12 5:57:17.721 PM org.gpgtools.macgpg2.gpg-agent: gpg-agent[3890]: SIGHUP received - re-reading configuration and flushing cache
2/8/12 5:57:17.721 PM org.gpgtools.macgpg2.gpg-agent: gpg-agent[3890]: option file `/Users/sysadmin/.gnupg/gpg-agent.conf': No such file or directory
So how do I get a gpg-agent.conf file?

From the error log i gather you didn't install the MacGPG2 package of GPGTools, is that possible?

Well, I though I had installed the whole thing, but just to be doubly sure, I just downloaded your standalone MacGPG2 installer and ran it by itself. After restarting the machine, I got the very same console messages as before. Clicking on the GPG Preferences pane put the system into an infinite loop just as before, and I had to use Activity Monitor to force quit.

Ok, this one is tricky.
Any new error messages in Console.app now?
Also, could you repair disk permissions, just to be save?

I have repaired permissions a bunch on times since I started wrestling with this -- didn't help.
But I notice I may have inadvertently misled you when I title the thread "GPG Tools Pref Pane won't open."
It's actually GPGPreferences that won't open.

No no, I understood what you were talking about, but I just noticed that you have a GPGTools.prefPane as well.
It might be a residue from an old GPGTools installation.
Please try to remove the GPGTools.prefPane from /Users/ziggy/Library/PreferencePanes/ and try to open the GPGPreferences pane again

Yeah, I did that too, about an hour ago. It didn't help.
It's getting late, I'm worn out, and I'm going to bed....

It's 4:11am here, so I'm gonna do that too!
Hope we'll get this fixed tomorrow

Overnight, I got an email from our son. He says he just got a machine running Lion, and he has exactly the same problem I've had with the GPGPrefs pane: it won't open, puts his machine into an infinite loop, and has to be stopped by a force quit from Activity Monitor. This interests me because it is extremely unlikely that problematic software running on his computer would be the same as what I've got running on here. (Or HAD running on here before I deleted a lot of it.)
Thinking about this, I'm leaning toward the belief that the GPGPreferences Pane itself is the problem.
I've removed not only the GPG Tools Prefs pane, but also the GPGPrefs pane. I see that encryption and decryption of emails work just fine without them, so I don't see why I can't just leave it this way!

The error messages stayed the same as before:
2/8/12 5:57:17.706 PM System Preferences: Can't load config (/Users/sysadmin/.gnupg/gpg-agent.conf): Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=260 "The file “gpg-agent.conf” couldn’t be opened because there is no such file." UserInfo=0x400f558e0 {NSFilePath=/Users/sysadmin/.gnupg/gpg-agent.conf, NSUnderlyingError=0x400f54ba0 "The operation couldn’t be completed. No such file or directory"}
2/8/12 5:57:17.717 PM System Preferences: Can't load config (/Users/sysadmin/.gnupg/gpg-agent.conf): Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=260 "The file “gpg-agent.conf” couldn’t be opened because there is no such file." UserInfo=0x400e848e0 {NSFilePath=/Users/sysadmin/.gnupg/gpg-agent.conf, NSUnderlyingError=0x400f49f40 "The operation couldn’t be completed. No such file or directory"}
2/8/12 5:57:17.721 PM org.gpgtools.macgpg2.gpg-agent: gpg-agent[3890]: SIGHUP received - re-reading configuration and flushing cache
2/8/12 5:57:17.721 PM org.gpgtools.macgpg2.gpg-agent: gpg-agent[3890]: option file `/Users/sysadmin/.gnupg/gpg-agent.conf': No such file or directory
But this raises a question: There is no /Users/sysadmin/.gnupg/gpg-agent.conf
but there IS a /Users/sysadmin/.gnupg/gpg.conf
It's not possible that gpg.conf is supposed to be gpg-agent.conf, is it??
Inquiring minds want to know ....
Meanwhile, encrypting and decrypting are working fine without the GPGPrefs pane.

The two config file handle different pieces of gpg, so no, both should be there.
I'll attach a standard gpg-agent.conf which you can copy to gpg-agent.conf.
In an attempt to reproduce your problem I've moved my gpg-agent.conf and while I can see the same error message as you do now, it doesn't prevent the preference pane from loading.
I'm not yet running 10.7.3 so it might be related to that version specifically.
After updating, I'll let you know if I run into the same problem.
Let me know if the gpg-agent.conf fixes the problem for you.

Yes! I put the gpg-agent.conf into the .gnupg folder along with gpg.conf and then ran the GPGPreferences.prefPane installer from a couple of days ago, and now it works fine!
Thanks for all your help!
