GPGTools are solely for Apple´s Mail.app.

For Thunderbird you have to use the add-on Enigmail:

https://www.enigmail.net/index.php/en/

In it´s documentation you´ll find the hints for how to install and set up the other components necessary for GPG to work.

Thomas_Utag:gpgtools.tenderapp.com,2011-11-04:Comment/427296182017-06-08T14:31:45Z2017-06-08T14:31:48ZVersion for OSX 10.8.5

Thanks. I misunderstood from the Thunderbird help page, having in fact used GPGTools in the past for Apple's mail app on another machine. Hopefully I have enigmail working now.

xgippertag:gpgtools.tenderapp.com,2011-11-04:Comment/427296182017-06-15T12:36:59Z2017-06-15T12:36:59ZVersion for OSX 10.8.5

Hi xgripper,

welcome to the GPGTools support platform. Sorry you are having problems using GPG Suite.

Seems you already found the page for unsupported old operating systems:
https://releases.gpgtools.org/oldies/

There is a release for macOS 10.8. We do not develop Enigmail, so regarding that it's best to get in touch with their support.

If you can, I would highly suggest to update to a newer macOS version since you may be missing important security fixes from Apple otherwise.

All the best,
