thanks for your thorough report.

The fact that the preview "survived" is due to the circumstance,
that previews are created once and then kept. So they are not
updated everytime you revisit a mail. That applies to incoming
mails. I'd assume draft previews are updated, but only when the
draft is changed. So mail is not decrypting your drafts, but only
grabbing the old already existing previews and displaying them.

You may be seeing a bug here, where drafts get encrypted twice.
I assume this is what happened in some cases here. To get back to
your drafts, please follow the steps outlined here:

#2 is of interest here.

Please let know if that worked and you were able to re-gain
access to your drafts. Make sure to follow all steps up until
#3.

All the best,

thank you very much for your help.

I’ve been able to recover at least the plain text messages
using the method described by you.

Unfortunately, it didn’t work with messages containing
attachments (some of them inside the message). After the decryption
the attachments won’t be displayed in Apple Mail, instead
they look like this:

Is there any way of also decrypting the attachments included in
the messages in a proper way?

Thank you very much!

Best,
Patrick

Richard von Seydewitztag:gpgtools.tenderapp.com,2011-11-04:Comment/413071412017-02-24T12:21:29Z2017-02-24T12:21:29ZDraft messages can not be uncrypted after updating GPGtools

Hey Patrick,

yes. Please try the following:

The fact that you are seeing two attachments "Mail-attachment"
and "encrypted.asc" in combination with the Security info
"Encrypted" and no error message, indicates, that the draft could
be encrypted twice.

So before going into the debugging part, let's first try to
recover your draft:

drag the encrypted.asc file to your desktop

right-click the file

select Services > OpenPGP: Decrypt file

rename resulting file to .eml

double click new file and Mail.app should

That should open the draft as you left it. If you run into any
error messages during the process, please create a screenshot and
attach the image to your discussion.

While it is possible that we can't fix the double encrypted
drafts, we are working on preventing this situation to occur in the
future. Work has already begun and it would be helpful, if you
could install the latest nightly GPG Suite from https://releases.gpgtools.org/nightlies/.
Please let us know if with that version you are still running into
drafts which are not decrypted in Mail.app.

Kindly,
