GPG Config Error
Good Day Sirs/Madam...
I have a MacAir with OS Lion. I have installed the GPG recently for
mail and have been running fine up to today.
I have now a message " GPG Config Error .... Ups, something went
wrong. GPG was found on your system but there seems to be a problem
with the config file. Please contact GPGTools team http://www.gpgtools.org/about.html."

Does the issue still occurs after (re-)installing the latest GPGTools package?
2 Posted by Troy T on 25 Jan, 2012 03:32 AM
I have the exact same issue and it continues after both restarting and re-installing. I've not had luck with prior versions of GPG and there may be elements of those old packages lurking somewhere on my machine. I've run multiple versions of the "uninstall" app, but also without luck.

Ok, let's hunt this bug down. Could you please attach your gpg.conf file? See http://support.gpgtools.org/kb/faq/how-can-i-generate-debugging-inf... for details.

Alex
I'll get that to you tonight. Sorry on the delay―I work in Finance and it's a busy time of year for my group.
Kind regards,

Hi Troy,
testing your configuration I can't find any errors on my system, so I guess
old installations also messed up your system a bit.
The easiest way to solve this would be a sceen sharing session.
Of course this is a very sensitive process but it's often the fastest way
to fix potential bugs unrelated to the tools themselves.
I'd propose to use Team Viewer if you'd be willing to do that.

Luke
I'm not comfortable with that approach—I use this machine for work and have a large number of confidential client files on the drive. If you can provide a list of where residual files from previous installs could be hanging out, I'll hunt them down and remove them (keeping a list of what has been removed for future troubleshooting, if needed).
If you have other options, please let me know.
I really do appreciate the time and effort you and your team are devoting to my problem, but I can't hand over the keys to my encrypted drive.
Kind regards,
Troy.

Hi Troy,
of course, that's absolutely understandable.
We'll find a way to fix it without remote access.
Could you please open terminal.app and run the
following commands (after typing each line press enter)
and post their output?
ls -l /usr/local
ls -l /opt
which gpg
which gpg2
ls -l ~/.gnupg
ls -ld ~/.gnupg
This should already give us some more insight

Please install the latest MacGPG2 from http://www.gpgtools.org/macgpg2/index.html
Support Staff 12 Posted by Luke Le on 09 Feb, 2012 02:29 PM
Hi Troy,
as Mento points out, it looks like you don't have our version of GPG 2.x installed, which might be the reason why you're still seeing problems.
Please install the package from the site Mento linked to and let us know if it solves your problems.
13 Posted by Troy Torres on 09 Feb, 2012 02:44 PM
I will do that tonight.
FYI: I did use the provided uninstaller before contacting you about this issue. Mail would give me error messages when the package was installed but not working.
Kind regards,
Troy.

Luke and Mento
I re-installed the following in this order:
1. MacGPG2-2.0.17-9
2. GPG Keychain Access-1.0b6
3. GPGMail-2.0a21
4. GPGPreferences-0.9.2
5. GPGServices-1.6
When I ran GPG Keychain Access, the following error came up:
GPG Keychain Access
GPG Config Error
Ups, something went wrong. GPG was found on your system but there seems to be a problem with the config file. Please contact the GPGTools team http://www.gpgtools.org/about.html.
When I ran Mail, the following error came up:
GPG_CONFIG_ERROR_TITLE
GPG_CONFIG_ERROR_MESSAGE
Then I reinstalled the GPGTools-20111224.dmg package (35.7MB) over the top of what was already there and tried again with the exact same results.
Also, in the GPG preference pane, the Default Key box is blank and it does not allow me to select anything (I have existing keys from another Mac).
Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.
Kind regards,
Troy.

Hi Troy,
could you please post your ~/.gnupg/gpg.conf file again?
It's strange you're still getting this error.
Please also check your Console.app log for error messages and post them.

Hi Troy,
unfortunately there's no error discoverable in the info you sent us.
One last thing I could think of is two commands you could run in terminal:
ls -l /usr/local/bin/gpg2
ls -l /usr/local/bin/gpg
and one other is trying to encrypt a file in terminal
gpg2 -a -e -r email path/to/file
replace email with the address of someone you have the public key to.
Please post the output and hopefully we'll finally find out what's wrong.

Hi,
I have the same problem, and when uninstalling gpgtools using the uninstaller I still have the Icon of gpgtool in my System Preferences.. ;(
Is there any solution for this problem yet?
Best regards
22 Posted by Alex on 28 Feb, 2012 07:50 PM
@Chief: Thanks. The nightly release (see http://nightly.gpgtools.org ) now removes the System Preference too (it wasn't deleted since it was renamed some weeks ago)
@TAN/Troy/Gary: please provide us the "General GPGTools System Diagnostics" (see http://support.gpgtools.org/kb/faq/how-can-i-generate-debugging-inf...) in case you still have config errors and create a new discussion for yourself. It's hard keep track on open issues if they get "hijacked" ;)

Alex
Good news. GPG now works on my machine. I did a lot of "cleaning up" but I believe the ultimate culprit was what I found when looking to see if I was infected with Flashback.G (see the following article: http://tidbits.com/article/12818 ). About half way down the page, you'll see this paragraph:
This latest variant also creates a file at /Users/Shared/.svcdmp and a plist file, used to patch applications, at ~/.MACOSX/environment.plist, along with a log stored at ~/Library/Logs/vmLog.
I went into the environment.plist file to see what was going on and I was shocked to see some GPG stuff from six years ago. I made a backup of this file, then deleted it, reinstalled GPG and it worked! I must say that I'm not 100% certain this was the culprit—I had also used ONYX to purge all of my caches, rebuild everything ONYX would let me rebuild, and for good measure, I restarted with zapping the P-RAM. It may have been one of these other items that did the job, but I really think it was some conflicting legacy code in that environment.plist file.
Here is my (recently updated) public key.
