Mountain Lion GPGTools (web)
Just wondering if you guys have an expected release date for GPG Tools for Mountain Lion OS X . Also, if you aren't expecting to have it running soon, is there any other way to encrypt email with Mountain Lion?

MacPromoc,
thank you very much for your kind words!
We really appreciate all the support we're getting.
Especially since the donation only option was some kind of last resort.
We're looking into more permanent way to finance development since we're strongly committed to this project and wouldn't want to see it slide away.

I also donated but have not received an e-mail with the 10.8 version.
Thanks

Hi Malcolm,
sorry, at the moment we're still sending out the emails manually, so it could take a little time.
34 Posted by MacPomoc.pl on 07 Oct, 2012 01:20 PM
Exactly! I hope you guys take this as a lesson and see that:
1. People do need this for work - it is VERY important!
2. People are willing to pay even a small amount to get something working
3. Only now that they MUST pay they are doing it - Sorry, but why the hell didn't you folks donate before??? Thanks for donating and make sure other users do too!!
4. GPG Tools team, Let's do a little bit of marketing and get a LOT of people to donate (even small amounts) to REALLY make sure the project becomes a SUSTAINABLE project once you guys end your studies, or change your jobs, or get families, or move, or get bored, or whatever...
5. Be sure to keep REALLY good communications with the active supporters (donors, coders, and bug reporters).
That being said, I think you guys REALLY are doing a great job. I will help in any way I can. If some help getting the word out (a little honest marketing) or some help writing documentation, or opinions on user-realted stuff, let me know.
BTW - I LOVE the new wizard which walks new users through setting up a key. This is EXACTLY what I hoped for. :-)

We've got some stuff to reveal soon which will hopefully push the idea that we really need the help of all of our users to keep the tools going.
36 Posted by MacPomoc.pl on 07 Oct, 2012 01:40 PM
:-) Good. However, I hope you use the momentum of this release to do it. :-) Perhaps consider making the DONATE text on the home page BIGGER right now. I'm already emailing other known business users to go over and donate. I hope they come through. Also, putting some more specific text referring ML would be nice on the donations page. I think you guys should hold out a little bit to make sure the ones that can donate do it. Again, not to be rude, but any company depending on GPG Tools really ought to be helping - even if a little. The marketing will expand that to a broader base of support and hopefully get you some more funding which you deserve.

MacPomoc, exactly all of your mentioned stuff is already planned ;-) You might be excited :)
Thank you very much for spreading the word!

What kind of version for 10.8 is Malcom talking about?
I like and support the donation program since it is important to development and to stay kinda competitive. The lack of corporate interest is buffling.
Keep it up!

@Fax: the one in your inbox ;-) (sorry we're sending them out manually at the moment, so it might take a little) Thank you very much for your donation! Grüße aus Wien :)

Interesting.....didn't know you guys are stationed in Vienna...or at least part of your team...I was brought to the subject by some security guys I am working with....and since you mentioned you are seeking support - in which way?
Cheers FaX

Two of us are from Austria, the other two from Germany.
At the moment we're sorting some things out, but basically we need support in regards to documentation, translation, coding of some of the tools.
Once the Mountain Lion build is stable and out we'll have more specific plans

The other thing that a lot of companies in my world do is consider open source contributors with a valid FOSS organization email as eligible for free licenses. Firstly, because there aren't that many of us so there's not a lot of loss, and secondly, because we all commonly use each other's software and we wouldn't have been able to make our own contributions without the contributions of those others in FOSS. Even if you guys set the enrollment to only other people that have contributed to projects that have benefited the OSX ecosystem (for instance, just Apache HTTPD instead of anyone from apache.org), it still makes a statement that recognizes the sacrifices we all make for the movement.
Congrats on making progress in any event! I'm excited to see that you found enough donors willing to take the chance without any expected timeframes or budgets and hope that it was all as rewarding as you had hoped for.
Support Staff 44 Posted by Luke Le on 09 Oct, 2012 07:04 AM
Hi Brian,
that sounds like a great idea! I'll have to talk to my other team mates but we should definitely introduce something like that.
(Seeing your apache.org address, should we start with you?)
Support Staff 45 Posted by Luke Le on 09 Oct, 2012 08:56 AM
Brian,
one thing though. You are aware that our tools are free for anyone? Only early access in this very case is donation only, in order to help us free a little more time for development (we're all freelancers) and speed up the release.
46 Posted by Brian Topping on 09 Oct, 2012 09:12 AM
Thanks Luke, but I'm a Java guy and haven't contributed anything to the C/C++/ObjC space since I can't remember. It doesn't sound like it's going to be a long time until you guys get things released and maybe that will be true in the future as well, so it may not be worth complicating things, but if the trend continues and some features are behind a paywall, it would be nice to have access to them as a courtesy.
Regarding your second note, I do know that your tools are free and can't help but compare it to other efforts where the donations are accepted. I guess this time as I thought about it, the answer came to me that many organizations accept donations for early access to built binaries, but anyone that knows how to build them can download the source and then build it. This "unadvertised backdoor" is available for those that have the mojo. Not many do, so they will pay money for getting a copy. Everyone wins.
Unfortunately, it seems that the Github ML branch isn't current. True?

Responding to Luke Le:
"At the moment we're sorting some things out, but basically we need support in regards to documentation, translation, coding of some of the tools. Once the Mountain Lion build is stable and out we'll have more specific plans"
I can do some documentation or marketing. Feel free to email me directly.

Hi Brian,
you're absolutely right, the source code is not yet up which is a shortcoming on our side that is going to change next week.
One reason we didn't release the source code immediately but wanted to wait till all donors got access to the first preview was, that we wanted to avoid that someone builds it and redistributes it themselves which we felt might have been unfair to our donators. (This might have been short sighted. Since all of our donors should have received their build by now, there's nothing keeping us from releasing it now. That's why it will happen next week.)
We certainly have no intentions to keep our donators from forwarding the direct download link since then it's their active choice. We also have no intention to keep anyone from building it for themselves.
We're currently looking into other ways to finance development since over the last year it became clear to us that we don't wanna continue working on this project solely as a hobby but provide anything a professional company would while trying the best to keep the tools free for everyone if anyway possible.
I absoutely think that it's only fair to give FOSS contributors special access, the idea just didn't cross our minds yet.
At this point I also strongly wanna emphasize that we're in no way in it for the money. In fact our main goal is to run his project as professional as possible including first-grade support, super simple to use interfaces (we're not there yet) but without the need to charge for it.
We really value your input, since we're only just learning as our project gains more attention and we go along.

Hi Luke,
I was thinking about what you wrote here and considering if there was some way that a signing key could give away who built it (so they could be publicly shamed as in the iOS unlocking world), but then it hit me like a ton of bricks: Sell it for $3.99 in the app store, no binary downloads on the site! Source would still be in Github, and if you're really concerned about it, change the license to GPL. Those with mojo can still get the thing for free, and you'll probably have a 50:1 conversion ratio to paid users, plus all the extra publicity that comes from it.

Hello,
I have donated also, but I has not yet received the version for osx 10.8.
What can I do?
Support Staff 51 Posted by Luke Le on 09 Oct, 2012 12:17 PM
Hi Brian,
we've considered that possibility a while ago, but for one we can't do that with GPGMail since it's not an app but a plugin which are tolerated by apple for Mail but not officially supported. And our GPL license currently would not be compatible with apple's App Store license (in theory)
The main reason though was that we wanted to find a different solution without charging if possible.
As it currently stands we'll certainly re-evaluate that option at a later point.

Ciao Guido,
we're currently sending out all emails with instructions manually, so it might take some time before you receive that.
You should be seeing it in your inbox any moment now.

Where do I file a bug report...?
Support Staff 54 Posted by Luke Le on 09 Oct, 2012 03:33 PM
Best describe the problem in a new discussion here. We will evaluate it then and add a ticket in our bug tracking system if it is absolutely clear that it is a bug. Or if you're already certain it is one and not related to a configuration issue or similar, you can directly file it at gpgtools.lighthouseapp.com
Thanks!

Long time PGP/GPG supporter (bough PZ's [source] book when it was new), first time poster here.
Regarding the AppStore vs GIT source model, have a look at BetaBuilder for iOS:
Modulo Licensing deltas, perhaps you guys could use a similar model?
Cheers,

Thanks Steve,
we'll have a look at it and see how they're doing it.

I have not used the ML version of GPGTools very much, but so far so good. Installed fine, I eventually recalled my pass phrase!, and all seems well.
ISSUE 1
I do see a very large amount of these in the system log, I'm not sure its new with ML GPGTools or not (i.e. I don't check the console too often).
10/23/12 12:35:03.550 PM sandboxd[44192]: ([43183]) Mail(43183) deny file-read-data /Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
The file does have public read, so if it is a read I don't see what is happening
jrgs-MBP:~ jrg$ ls -l /Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 96 Oct 9 10:34 /Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist jrgs-MBP:~ jrg$
ISSUE 2
I just got a decryption failure when sending a test to myself with "unknown system error". Not sure where to find the full data on that. I tired the same thing again and it worked fine.
58 Posted by Branden Siu on 24 Oct, 2012 08:53 AM
just send a little donation for the hardworking you guys put in to help us to get the GPGMail for ML ASAP
Hope to see something in my inbox soon!
Support Staff 59 Posted by Luke Le on 24 Oct, 2012 10:23 AM
@John: Nr. 1 is a known issue which we'll fix in the next preview. You can also remove the file by hand if you want. The messages are bothering indeed, but do no harm.
If you could reproduce issue nr. 2 and describe the steps it would be great. Have not seen this one before. In OS X Mountain Lion we use an external service (external from Mail.app) which Mail.app communicates with and is started on demand. There's some possibility that start up for that service takes too long, so if you try a second later to decrypt again it should work. The service is started on Mail.app startup.
@Branden: Thank you very much for your donation! It should have magically appeared in there now :)!

Greetings - I donated! :) When you get a moment can you e-mail me a link to the mountain lion version? Many thanks. -d
