Cannot decrypt file after putting in wrong passphrase
Environment:
- Software name and version: GPG Services / decrypt
- OS X version: 10.8.1 (but was also not working under Lion)
- GPGTools Installer date: re-installed about 2 weeks ago
What steps will reproduce the problem? Please be as specific as possible.
- I have a file file.asc that has been encrypted with a passphrase
- I right-click and choose Open PGP Services > Decrypt File
- Immediately I get an error message: "Decrypt failed! file.asc Decrypt failed! Error Code = 0"
On my windows machine I get the option of trying the passphrase
again and it will work. Why can I not re-enter the passphrase.
I also removed and re-installed PGP Tools to no avail. What
gives!
I downloaded the file again, saved to new location, same error. No
option to try another passphrase. God forbid you fat finger the
passphrase - you will never be able to open the message!
Thanks,
Stig

Hey Stig,
sorry to hear you are having issues with GPGTools.
Could you create a test file with symmetric encryption (Password) and attach it into this thread and give us the password so we can test this? Is this problem reproducible for you?
All the best,
steve

Hey Steve,
Thanks for the prompt reply. I just got it to work. I did the nightly
install and after that when I attempted to decrypt the file it came up with
the prompt to access my keychain. I said deny and at that point I was able
to put in the correct passphrase and decrypt.
So now I'm not sure what happened except that the passphrase was saved to my
keychain for continued use and I didn't know how to undo that action.
If you know how I can purge the passphrase from my keychain I would be all
ears and thankful.
Cheers,
Stig

Hi Stig,
to remove the passphrase from the keychain it should be as simple as,
opening Keychain Access (not GPG Keychain Access), searching for "GnuPG" (without the quotes) and remove any entries you find.
Hope that helps.

That helps and I realize now my confusion - I was looking in GPG Keychain.
Thanks!
