private key (web)
I lost my hard drive and had to format and reinstall. How do I import my private key from the server?

Hi,
if you're referring to a keyserver, you only store your public key
ob that.
So if you don't have a backup, you're pretty much out of luck.
you could try to use a recovery software but it's not sure you're gonna
get your keys back.
Sorry

Let me tell you, that this happened to me as well. Although it doesn't help. But Luke is right, either you have your sec key on some backup or you try file recovery which gives you know certainty that it will be successful or the sec key can be retrieved.
You lost your hard drive? That sounds weird. Is this key essential to you? If you only have a few mails you might consider simply creating a new key pair and move on?
Sorry, no better news...

Thanks for the input. It is important as I have had it for years. I think I will look for a USB that I think I may have used to back things up once.
Yes, the computer simply would not boot and neither restore worked on it.

Hey Phil, that sucks. I thought you physically lost your harddrive and was puzzled how you can loose a harddisk from your computer.
Good luck finding your usb-stick. Hope your sec key is on there.

Hey, this is great news. One of the few occasions where someone actually has a working backup. Good stuff. I also found your public key on the key server. Do you need any further help? Cheers, steve
