Cannot Create or Import Keys - Blank Key Server
I'm a new GPGtools user and I'm having some problems getting started.
First of all, I am using: OSX 10.6.8, latest GPGtools, Thunderbird
I started with the latest GPGtools public release, but when I encountered a "...failed code = 0" after attempting to create or import a public key, I downloaded the most recent nightly build. Unfortunately, that did not solve my problem.
I thought it may be the key server, and when I looked in preferences the key server box was blank, and there was nothing for me to select from the drop box either.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I finally found a list of working key servers. I'm using: sks-keyservers.net
Adding that server fixed part of my problem, but not all of it. Since then I have been able to create and export a public key, as well as import my own public key. However, I have a problem when I attempt to import someone else's public key through textedit or through the import tab in GPG keychain. It just turns gray in text edit, and I see no additions to my GPG keychain access. And when I try using the import tab from GPG to import someones public key that I have paced in a textedit .rtf file I get the "...failed code = 0" error.
At this point I am not sure if its user error (although, I doubt it) or a software issue.
Thanks in advance. I appreciate any help!

Hey mlg & NewPGP,
sorry to hear you are having issues. I just downloaded the latest GPG Keychain Access nightly from http://nightly.gpgtools.org/ . When I go to settings > key server I see a list of selectable key servers.
Do both of you not see that list? There should be several key servers by default. If not we need to investigate why they are missing for you. Please let us know.
NewPGP: about your importing issue: Could you try copy pasting (via shortcuts) the public key in question into GPG Keychain Access? If that does not work, could you please attach the key giving you trouble into this discussion here, so we can test it?
Hope this helps and cheers :)

I think I have fixed the import problem, but I still don't have any key servers, save for the one I entered manually. I am not sure what the issue is, but that server seems to be working.
I'm still having a problem encrypting things, however. When I try to encrypt an email through Thunderbird, I am prompted with an error that states: "Error in OpenPGP; Encryption/signing failed; send unencrypted message?"
I have also tried to encrypt text in textedit, as I was told by other users I could write in textedit, highlight, and encrypt through the services tab. I was told from there it is supposed to open a key box, so that I can select a recipients key, but mine does not. Instead, the highlighted text goes from blue to grey, but nothing happens.
Let me know what info you need. I'm happy to help, if it will resolve these issues in future releases. Thanks.

I tried encrypting an email again and got a different error this time.
"Key *********** not found or not valid. The (sub-)key might have expired.
gpg command line and output:
gpg
gpg: skipped "0xC986FA77": No secret key
gpg: [stdin]: sign+encrypt failed: No secret key"
I have no idea what I'm doing wrong...

Sounds a bit fuzzy.
Could you use Mail.app, simply for testing purposes)?
Please go to https://nightly.gpgtools.org/ and download the latest nightly GPGTools installer.
Then check again, if GPG Keychain Access key server settings are still blank. Feel free to attach a screenshot of your GPG Keychain Access. Should you be uncomfortable with any info being vieable by the public, please switch this discussion to private and only you, the core-team and the company hosting this service will be able to view this discussion.
Could you send a test mail to GPGTools? (our pub key is in the installer - make sure to select it, when you are running the installer, is on by default)
As for THunderbird: could you make sure you are on the latest Thunderbird release? After that: go to add-ons and also make sure you have the latest enigmail plug-in installed as well.
Hope this helps,
steve
