Quick GPGTools Services Question

Hello,

I have scoured your support pages for the answer to this question, but to no avail. Basically, I am trying to encrypt text with another user's public key. I have imported their key into my keychain (it shows up in the GPG Keychain Access along with the "GPGTools Project Team" key as well as my own private key that was generated when I downloaded the software), and I have enabled all of the Open PGP text services in my Keyboard System Preferences, per the tutorial video on your website. However, when I open my text in TextEdit, right-click the selected text, and select Services -> "OpenPGP Encrypt Selection," the imported public key does not show up. Am I missing something here?

Apologies in advance for this being a potentially elementary question. I'm a new user, forgive me!

Thanks,
Rob

    Hi Rob,

That can happen if the public key in question is revoked or expired. In the GPG Keychain they are grey.
They also do not show up If the key has no subkey (or encryption key), which is kind of obvious as there is no key to encrypt it with. Such a key is probably only used to sign messages or documents.

As you are new to this, there is a lot of good info in the manual at gnupg. http://www.gnupg.org/gph/en/manual.html
    Specifically something about subkeys: http://www.gnupg.org/gph/en/manual.html#AEN526

    Hope this helps!

    Karel, thanks for chiming in!

That is correct and also Rob, from what you write it sounds like on your side the setup is fine. Have you tried sending your contact an encrypted mail?

Depending on the outcome that would help us to narrow down where this problem is coming from. Also pls check (what Karel wrote) is the pub key in question is in a light grey in GPG Keychain Access. Also before cheking, mark that key and go to menu > keys > update from key server

    All the best :)
