Secret Key does not Decrypt

On Macc OS X 10.7.4 using GPG Keychain Access Version 1.0b7

I sent my public key using the export on my pub key with my email and someone used it to encrypt their data.

They sent it back to me, but when I do a gpg -d 'filepath' it says 'decrpytion failed: no secret key'

I stored the public key I sent him and it matches the same hash of the ShortID I have in my list of keys right now...what exactly is wrong here or is there a way to fix it? I even have the passphrase of the key I wrote down as well.

Thank you!

    Hey Brad,

the user you sent your pub key to sends that pub key back to you? That is not necessary. Also it can not include a sec key (since it is only the pub key).

Not sure what you are trying to achieve. Are you trying to transfere encrypted mail or an encrypted file?

Could you have a look in your GPG Keychain Access if you have the correct sec key matching the pub key used to encrypt the file/mail your friend was sending you.

    All the best,
