After installing GPGTools-20120318 (and earlier) Mail.app no
longer displays any Japanese texts.
GPG is useless for me for many versions now. I have seen this
discussed but never seen any fix.

Hi Peter,
could you please attach an example email showing that problem?
I'll look into it.

You mean you tested the version from nightly.gpgtools.org and it didn't help?

This should do - any mail containing Japanese should do.
ペータお元気ですか。日々お忙しいことと思います。
The line above comes out as blank (also subject lines containing Japanese are blanked out) with GPG Mail installed.
After uninstalling everything returns back to normal.

Please attach an actual .eml file or send an email to lukele at gpgtools.org.
It's necessary for us to know if this happens with every email or only signed | encrypted emails.
Also please consider installing the nightly GPGMail version since it already includes some fixes in that area.

Btw. I have no problem what so ever to read the japanese text you posted on here in Mail.

Er, no.
I tested GPGTools-20120318.
This has been an issue of previous GPG incarnations since quite a couple of years.
I don't remember where exactly but people working on GPG (GPG Mail) then were aware of this issue but could not offer a fix.
So when I saw this most recent incarnation advertised on Macupdate I thought I give it a try - but to no avail.
In other words: No, I didn't see this discussed in relation to recent nightly builds, but months or even years ago.
So: Should I do try a nightly build since it offers a fix for this issue?

What version of OS X are you on?
GPGMail is only actively developed for Lion at the moment. Once the 2.0 release is completed we consider backporting that version to Snow Leopard.
So if you're on Snow Leopard still, I'm sorry to say, you might be out of luck.
Otherwise, yes please, try the current GPGMail nightly.

10.6.8

Very sorry then.
As far as I remember this is not related to GPGMail only but also to OS X itself.

Happens with each and every Japanese mail.
In fact I have never received an encrypted mail in Japanese.
All I have to do is install GPG tools via the installer - not even bothering to create a key - and the trouble starts. After running the uninstaller everything is OK again.

GPGMail 2.0 for Lion is a complete rewrite from scratch and since I could see
the japanese text correctly I guess this is indeed solved.
You'll have to either wait for the back port of the 2.0 version or upgrade to Lion.

Installed current nightly - no change.
Apart from that: if GPGTools is for Lion - why does it install on 10.6.8?
I happen to hate Lion (both as a user and hobbyist developer) and as far as I could see I am likely to dislike Snow Lion even more...

Hi,
Best regards, Alex

Just received the test email and it displays just fine.
I don't think Lion is that different to Snow Leopard either user or developer wise but that will only leave you the option to wait.

Ok, I think there is nothing we can do about this. From what I read, the japanese font seems to work fine on 10.7. It does not work though on 10.6.8 and appears to be a flaw in Mac OS X.
Since GPGMail 2.0 will be 10.7 only (at first - we might do a backport later) there is nothing we can do about this. Sorry, I don't have a more charming answer for this currently.
All the best,
steve
