GPGMail: Missing lock and sign buttons from compose window

I have installed the software but when I come to compose an email the lock and sign buttons are not showing as they are supposed to be.

Expected
I was expecting the two buttons to be visible

    Hi Piers,

    welcome to the GPGTools support platform. Sorry you are having problems using GPG Suite.

    Was this previously working as expected or was your setup never working so far?

    When you open Mail.app > Preferences do you see GPGMail? If so, which color do you see for the color indicator bubble?

    We'll go from there.
