<p>Even though I did execute "defaults write org.gpgtools.gpgmail DefaultSecurityMethod -int 2" whenever I click sign mail icon OpenPGP is selected instead of S/MIME.</p>
<p><strong>What did you expect instead</strong></p>
<p>Basically I want to have by default enabled signing of all outgoing emails with S/MIME as it was before I installed GPG Mail.</p>

<p>Compose message, click on sign</p>

<p>welcome to the GPGTools support platform. Sorry you are having problems using GPG Suite.</p>
<p>Can you please open terminal and send the output for the following command:</p>
<pre>
<code>defaults read org.gpgtools.gpgmail DefaultSecurityMethod</code>
</pre>
<p>Can you restart Mail.app and see if the problem persists?</p>
<p>And can you double check your S/MIME cert is still valid. If it is, export and re-import it to macOS keychain.</p>
