Many drafts are kept after installing GPG
Hi,
Checking if this behavior is normal:
I would like new drafts to be encrypted by default (in case I chose to encrypt before sending) but I also want them deleted from Drafts once they have been sent.
Currently, I sign all my messages but don't encrypt any and my Drafts folder is full of encrypted versions of sent emails.
Is this the same bug mentioned here?
Thanks,
Franck

Hi Frank,
welcome to the GPGTools support platform. Sorry you are having problems using GPG Suite.
The problem at hand is caused by a bug in Apples Mail.app. It already exists in Apples bug tracking system and is bug #7053869. We first reported this problem with multiple drafts to Apple back in 2013 as bug #15368837. That bug was set to dupe of #7053869, so the issue must have been know earlier.
Please use their feedback form to inform Apple about this problem and ask them kindly to consider investing the time to fix this long-standing Mail.app bug. It may help to add the bug number, so they know which issue you are referring to.
Can I ask which email service you are using and if IMAP or POP? Also does disabling the setting to encrypt drafts at Mail.app > Preferences > GPGMail change anything for the better or worse?
Kind regards,
steve

Hi Steve!
Thanks for your message - I’m a bit surprised mine was stuck in the queue for so long, it was initially sent around May 14th I believe :-)
Thanks for pointing the Apple bug references, I’ll definitely ping them.
I’m using IMAP and disabling the setting to encrypt drafts has fixed the issue for me. Since I’m using it only to sign messages and not to encrypt I’m happy with the current workaround.
Thanks for your time!
F.

Yeah, please excuse the slow response.
Can you please observe the behavior. We know this is not limited to encrypted drafts. It also happened with unencrypted drafts as well as with GPGMail uninstalled. It may just happen more seldom.
If you hear anything from Apples side, please let us know. It would be great to get this bug fixed.

Hi Steve,
reopening previously sent mails I know see that there are a number of drafts saved indeed, even though I am set to NOT encrypt drafts.
I have seen a second copy of this very message being generated as I’m writing it.
Very weird. I saw the second copy appear and one of the two disappear roughly 20 seconds later. Right now I have three, two seconds later, I have only one.
So I can confirm it’s still happening in some cases but I haven’t found a pattern to reproduce it yet.
Thanks
Franck

I found an instance where I have eight copies in Drafts - you can follow my train of thought as I changed the email before sending it. Only the actual sent version is signed.
Is there anything I can send you that would be of help?

Hey Franck,
as mentioned, this is an actual bug in Apples Mail.app software which is known to Apple since 2013 likely even earlier.
The bug even happens with GPGMail removed from Mail.app.
We managed to workaround existing Apple bugs in Mail.app which meant, users with GPGMail installed where no longer seeing an unfixed Apple bug due to a workaround and fix in GPGMail. Quite odd, right. But for this issue we have not found a solution yet.
Kind regards,
steve

The bug where Mail.app created multiple drafts has been fixed by Apple in macOS 10.13. If you are still affected by this issue, consider updating to macOS 10.13 High Sierra.
